Homicide and suicide are the second and third leading causes of death, respectively, among teens ages of 15 to 19, after unintentional injury. Mood disorders such as depression, dysthymia, and bi-polar disorders are major risk factors for suicide among children and adolescents. Stressful life events and low levels of communication with parents may also be significant risk factors.

This workshop will cover the issue of suicide and homicide and its implications, not only for the suicidal/homicidal child, but for those who know, love and care for him or her. This workshop includes suicide/homicide prevention, education and training. fincludes suicide prevention, education and training.

This workshop will include discussions on the etiology, symptoms, appropriate diagnosis in this population, treatments, suicidal behaviors, and the impact on familly and school environments. Therapists, Mental Health Professionals and Educational Professionals such as School Counselors and Social Workers are often on the front line when dealing with children and adolescents struggling with suicidal and homicidal ideation inside and outside of the home. This workshop will address how to respond to these individuals, and coordinate care with the treatment team and family.

The following questions will also be addressed:

* "What groups are at risk for suicide?"

* "What makes certain groups more at-risk?"

* "What is the difference between normal adolescent behaviors and kids who need help?"

* "What are the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide?"

* "What are the indicators of possible suicide risk in a school setting?"

* "Cutting vs. suicide - what is the difference in assessing the situation?"
